Birtsas Periklis

Dr Periklis Birtsas is Full Professor and Director of Wildlife Management Laboratory at the University of Thessaly, Department of Forestry, Wood Sciences and Design (Karditsa, Greece). He holds a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Forestry and Natural Environment from the Department of Forestry & Natural Environment, Aristotle University (Thessaloniki, Greece) and a PhD in Wildlife Ecology and Management from the same Department of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Since 1993, he actively participated, as scientific coordinator in more than 30 research projects at various areas in Greece and participated in the scientific working groups of more than 10 research projects or studies. He has published more than 40 research papers in international Scientific Journals (SCI) and more than 160 research papers in proceedings of International and National Conferences as well as in National Scientific Journals. He has also authored two books and has participated with texts in collective scientific volumes, while he has more than 850 bibliographical references –(hindex 13, Google Scholar 06-2022). Dr Birtsas is a reviewer in international and Greek scientific journals and conferences’ proceedings. He is special advisor of the Hunting Federation of Macedonia and Thrace and he is Vice President of the Management Body of Mountains Voras, Vermio and Paiko. Professor Birtsas has also served as director general and scientific coordinator of Hunting Federation of Macedonia and Thrace (1996 – 2008). His main scientific interests include ecology and management of birds and mammals in Mediterranean region, ecology and management of wildlife diseases, management of Mediterranean-type ecosystems, marginal lands, as well as artificial wetlands (e.g. saltworks and saline ecosystems), species and ecosystem conservation, management of game species and hunting. Dr Birtsas is handy with field and laboratory techniques on ecology and wildlife management as well as an active wildlife photographer.
