The Department of Forestry, Wood Sciences & Design (FWSD) of the University of Thessaly, in accordance with the decision of its Assembly No. 91/14.6.2023 (item 3), announces fourteen (14) new PhD candidate positions and invites those interested to submit relevant application in the following proposed fields of knowledge / topics from faculty members of the FWSD Department:

  1. Entrepreneurship and innovation in the fields of circular bioeconomy and biomimicry (Rapporteur: Glykeria Karagkouni).
  2. LEAN AI: The coupling of artificial intelligence and lean production management in the wood-furniture industry (Rapporteur: Karagkouni Glykeria).
  3. The role of clustering / networking in Creative Crafts – business ecosystems (Rapporteur: Glykeria Karagkouni).
  4. Culture, tourism, resources & sustainable development (Rapporteur: Karagkouni Glykeria).
  5. Climate neutrality data processing systems and applications (Rapporteur: Lallas Efthimios).
  6. Influence of street on the uses and values of the surrounding area (Rapporteur: Papageorgiou Grigorios).
  7. Road infrastructure management (Rapporteur: Papageorgiou Grigorios).
  8. Neural networks and road networks (Rapporteur: Papageorgiou Grigorios).
  9. Non-Wood Forest Products (Rapporteur: Samaras Dimitrios).
  10. Residual natural terrestrial ecosystems in the plain of Thessaly (Rapporteur: Samaras Dimitrios).
  11. The effect of hunting on the entropy of the ecosystem (Rapporteur: Birtsas Periklis).
  12. Artificial Intelligence and Design
  13. Artificial Intelligence and Applications in the Environment (Rapporteur: Karageorgos Antonios).
  14. Development of Intelligent Systems and Applications in Indoor Spaces (Rapporteur: Karageorgos Antonios).

Submission of applications to start the thesis from the Winter Semester of the Academic Year 2023-2024: by 31 August 2023.

The required supporting documents are submitted in a nomination file and are as follows:

  2. Detailed CV.
  3. Doctoral research proposal where the methodology for conducting the proposed doctoral research is developed in full, including a draft of the contents of the thesis, taking into account the current scientific developments (state-of-the-art) and justifying on the one hand its original elements and on the other hand the relevance and possibility of its implementation in the DEXYS Department and includes the following:
  • Greek and English title,
  • Keywords,
  • brief description (200-400 words),
  • main purpose – research questions (200-400 words),
  • literature review (300-600 words),
  • research methodology (400-600 words),
  • bibliographical references,
  • justification of the originality of the research and its appropriate implementation in the FWSD Department.

4. Certified copy of degree or diploma, with recognition as provided by par. 4 of article 304 of law 4957/2022, and par. 2 of article 36 of law 5029/2023, if it has been acquired by A.E.I. of the foreign country.

5. Certified copy of a master’s degree, or a single and undivided master’s degree (integrated master) of article 78 of Law 4957/2022 and with recognition, as mentioned in the previous section, if it has been obtained from A.E.I. of the foreign country.

6. Certificates of analytical scores of undergraduate and postgraduate degrees

7. Proof of very good knowledge, at least B2 level, of English or another foreign language

8. Photocopy of police ID

9. Two (2) recent photographs.

The selection of doctoral candidates, if they meet the above conditions, is made taking into account the following basic and additional criteria.

Key Criteria:

I. Relevancy of the degree to the scientific fields of the FWSD Department and/or to the subject of the doctoral thesis.

II. Relevance of the master’s degree to the scientific fields of the FWSD Department and/or to the subject of the doctoral thesis.

III. Overall degree grade (minimum ‘six and a half’ (6.50) required). Regardless of degree level, the following can be accepted: a) Candidates with at least five years of research activity, documented by recent publications in reputable journals, and a similar research project related to the subject of the proposed doctoral research, b) Scholarship holders of IKY or other Organizations that sponsor scholarship following examinations or evaluation, and c) Candidates with at least five years of specialized professional experience which is absolutely relevant to the subject of the proposed doctoral research.

IV. Master’s degree overall grade (minimum of “seven” (7.00) required).

Additional Criteria:

I. Two recent letters of recommendation.

II. Details of the applicant’s CV demonstrating their research and professional experience and recognition.

III. Scholarship or other financial support (positively considered).

IV. Other tertiary qualifications.

In particular, for the evaluation of each proposal, the Committee scores on a scale of 1-5, the following criteria:

  • Title – Does it contain important keywords that identify the scientific field of the proposal?
  • Justification of originality.
  • Clear statement of the research problem – The gap that the research comes to fill (correlation with previous research).
  • Clarity of research questions.
  • Goals (specific, measurable, attainable, realistic).
  • Satisfactory description of the general scientific area and sub-areas within which the proposed research falls. Satisfactory reporting of key concepts for research.
  • Literature review – To demonstrate a fairly good knowledge of the specific field with up-to-date references of previous efforts in the research subject. Relevancy-appropriateness check of the cited bibliography.
  • Research methods – Statement of the proposed form of research and justification for its use.
  • Expected results – Contribution to the research area of the study – Presentation of the desired contribution to the research problem to advance scientific knowledge in the specific field.
  • Quality of writing – Clear and professional presentation of the research proposal (plagiarism no more than 20% on Turnitin). It refers to syntax, grammar, quality of written speech.
  • Research plan and schedule.
  • Overall picture of the proposal: existence of cover, contents, summary, separation of sections  (or stops here or we fully describe the elements of the overall picture of the proposal).
  • Degree of importance of the research proposal (according to the evaluator).
  • Report limitations of the study.

For the evaluation of the interview of each candidate, the Committee scores on a scale of 1-5, the following criteria:

  • Presentation of his/her work
  • Scientific training on the subject of FWSD
  • Scientific training related to the subject of the proposal
  • Formulation of answers
  • Contact
  • Motivations for preparing a doctoral thesis
  • Offer availability in the educational & research project of FWSD
  • Availability of physical presence on the FWSD
